Cross the river with historical context
Kazimierz is both a contemporary neighborhood and a center of Jewish history. Synagogues, cemeteries and museums remain religious or memorial spaces; check access, dress appropriately and avoid turning them into atmospheric backdrops. Continue across the river to Podgórze when visiting Ghetto Heroes Square or Schindler's Factory. The factory museum commonly needs advance booking and explains occupied Kraków more broadly than one familiar film story.
Choose food stops as part of the route: a milk bar, pierogi, obwarzanek or a Plac Nowy zapiekanka can be useful, affordable breaks. December markets and winter weather produce a different city from long summer evenings, so daylight and surfaces should change the schedule.
Choose one serious excursion
Wieliczka Salt Mine and Auschwitz-Birkenau are not equivalent day-trip slots. The mine is a physically involved underground visit with stairs and a fixed route. Auschwitz-Birkenau is a memorial and museum requiring preparation, respectful behavior and substantial emotional as well as travel time. Do not schedule both merely to maximize landmarks, and verify only official visitor information and transport shortly before travel.
