Prague's famous sights occupy a small area on the map, but the river, steep castle approach, timed interiors, and crowd patterns make sequencing matter. The strongest first visit does not repeatedly cross Charles Bridge between every reservation. Give each bank a clear purpose, then use the tram when it preserves time and energy for the streets you actually want to walk.
Divide the city by bank and elevation
Prague Castle and Malá Strana form one substantial block. Start near opening if the cathedral and castle interiors matter, then descend through the Lesser Town rather than climbing back later. Petřín can extend that side of the city, but it is not essential if the day already contains the full castle complex.
Old Town Square, the lanes around it, and Josefov fit more naturally on the east bank. The Jewish Museum sites are separate buildings with their own opening and ticket considerations, so treat them as a deliberate visit rather than scenery between the astronomical clock and lunch. Cross Charles Bridge early, late, or because it connects the day's route, not simply each time the itinerary needs a photograph.
Leave the monument circuit for an evening
Vinohrady, Holešovice, and the riverfront reveal a less compressed city. Choose one neighborhood for dinner or an evening walk instead of adding all three as quick pins. Czech beer halls also vary from historic institutions to relaxed gardens; one well-chosen stop is more useful than organizing every meal around beer history.
Kutná Hora is straightforward by rail but still consumes most of a useful day once transfers, the ossuary, and the historic center are included.
