Kōchi is a compact castle city separated from much of Shikoku by mountain transport. That isolation is part of the plan, not an inconvenience to erase. Begin at Kōchi Castle, then let the market arcades and downtown food culture shape the rest of the day. The city is particularly rewarding overnight, when Hirome Market and surrounding streets feel like civic life rather than lunch logistics.
Understand why the castle differs
Kōchi preserves both an original keep and its honmaru palace, an unusual chance to see defensive and residential spaces together. Allow time for steep stairs, timber interiors and interpretation instead of collecting another exterior keep. The nearby history museum can deepen the story of the Tosa domain and political figures, but check exhibitions and closing days before pairing both institutions.
The Sunday Market is day-specific and should never appear as a guaranteed stop. On other days, the arcades and Hirome Market still support a strong food route. Katsuo no tataki is the signature, often seared over straw, but seafood allergies, dietary needs and sourcing questions remain ordinary reasons to ask before ordering.
Put the Pacific coast on its own half-day
Katsurahama and Godaisan sit outside the central walking area and in different directions. Each needs planned transport. Swimming at Katsurahama is unsafe and restricted because of strong currents; treat it as a scenic and historical coast, not a beach day. Chikurin-ji remains an active pilgrimage temple and deserves the same respectful behavior as other religious sites.
