Avignon's walls contain a compact city, but the Palais des Papes deserves a substantial visit. Its scale and papal history need interpretation; choose the current visitor format and avoid stacking the bridge immediately behind every palace room. Continue to Rocher des Doms and the Rhône when heat and light are comfortable.
Read the city beyond the palace
Pont Saint-Bénézet survives only in part, which is central to its story rather than a disappointment. Markets, churches, museums and ordinary squares reveal the city around the monumental core. Active religious spaces require normal courtesy, and the ramparts should guide orientation rather than become another full checklist.
The July festival transforms streets, venues, accommodation and prices. It can be the reason to visit, but tickets and lodging require deliberate planning.
