The hard part of an Amalfi Coast and Naples itinerary is joining the city, the archaeological sites, and the vertical coast without spending the trip managing a car. This six-day route uses trains and ferries instead: two Naples days, two Positano days, one day through Amalfi and Ravello, then Herculaneum on the return.
The schedule follows the complete Naples and Amalfi Coast trip. It has a moderate pace and physical demand, suits couples, honeymooners, or friends, and is designed for April through June or September through October.
Set the fixed points before filling the days
Book the timed Sansevero Chapel slot on day one. The route also gives two arrival instructions worth protecting: take a number at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele, and reach Franco's Bar at opening or expect a queue.
Day four is the physical test. The Path of the Gods covers eight kilometres from Bomerano to Nocelle, followed by a choice between 1,700 steps and the bus into Positano. The rest of the itinerary is moderate, but that section should determine whether this exact route fits the group.
Day 1: Spaccanapoli and the first pizza
Start the Spaccanapoli walk at 10:00 and allow 105 minutes for the old city's straight central street. Lunch is at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele at 12:30, where the two choices have been margherita or marinara since 1870.
The Sansevero Chapel timed visit begins at 14:30 and lasts one hour. Its central work is the Veiled Christ. Leave a longer break before the 18:30 Via dei Tribunali food crawl, built around frittatina, cuoppo, and the option of a second pizza.
Day 2: Pompeii first, its objects afterward
Take the Circumvesuviana from Napoli Centrale and enter Pompeii through Porta Marina at 09:00. The itinerary allows four hours for the Forum, Villa dei Misteri, and amphitheatre.
Return to Naples for a 14:30 lunch at Tandem Ragu, followed by two hours at the National Archaeological Museum from 16:30. This order matters: after walking the site, the museum shows the mosaics and frescoes removed from Pompeii, including the Alexander mosaic upstairs.
Finish at 19:30 with an aperitivo on Lungomare Caracciolo, facing Castel dell'Ovo and Vesuvius across the bay.
Day 3: Arrive in Positano from the water
Take the 09:30 ferry from Molo Beverello to Positano. The crossing is scheduled for 90 minutes; choose a deck seat on the left for the planned first view of the coast.
From noon, descend through Positano's lanes to Spiaggia Grande and the quieter Fornillo end for a swim and two chairs. Lunch at Chez Black begins at 14:30, with spaghetti alle vongole on the beachfront row.
Franco's Bar is the sunset stop at 18:30. Arrive when it opens or plan to queue. Keeping the first coast day this contained leaves the long walk for the following morning.
Day 4: Walk the Path of the Gods
Take the bus to Bomerano for an 08:30 start on the Sentiero degli Dei. The route runs eight kilometres high above the coast and descends into Nocelle, with three and a half hours allocated.
Lunch begins at 12:30 at Trattoria Santa Croce in Nocelle. Afterward, choose between the 1,700 steps and the bus down into Positano; the source gives a full hour for that descent.
Dinner is at Da Vincenzo at 19:30, allowing 105 minutes for grilled fish and its wine list. Do not add another major activity to this day: the hike and descent are already its structure.
Day 5: Amalfi and the terraces of Ravello
Travel by boat to Amalfi for a 09:30 visit to its striped Arab-Norman cathedral. At 11:15, choose the paper museum or lemon granita; the museum preserves Amalfi's water-powered paper mill.
Lunch at Marina Grande begins at 12:15 before the bus to Ravello. Villa Rufolo is scheduled for 13:30, followed by Villa Cimbrone at 15:30. The first has the garden terrace that inspired Wagner and a summer cliff stage; the second ends at the Terrace of Infinity, with marble busts above a 350-metre drop.

Day 6: Herculaneum on the return to Naples
Spend two and a half hours at Herculaneum from 10:00. The site is smaller, deeper, and better preserved than Pompeii in the source itinerary, with wooden beams and second floors surviving.
Back in Naples, stop at Sfogliatelle Attanasio at 13:30 for a warm riccia near the station. At 15:00, continue to Galleria Umberto I and Caffe Gambrinus for the Belle Epoque coffee ritual. The final meal is pizza fritta at Zia Esterina Sorbillo at 18:00.

The route earns its shape by contrasting Naples with the coast and pairing Pompeii with Herculaneum. The main decision is day four.
